Police Scotland BikeRegister Scheme

Resources

Received from Police Scotland:

In response to a huge spike in bicycle thefts over the last 12 months Crime Reduction Officers in North East Division are running a series of bicycle security events across communities in Grampian this summer.

As part of the campaign we would like to give school age children, initially Academy age, in the region the opportunity to have their bikes added to the Police approved BikeRegister scheme. By simply adding owner and bike details to an onlline database it makes it much easier for bikes to be returned to their owners if stolen.

Please complete the attached spreadsheet for any children that would like to be part of the scheme and email back to NorthEastCrimeReduction@Scotland.pnn.police.uk. You may wish to consider having a lunchtime ‘event’ to get as many bikes registered as possible – we may be able to assist on the day. Once we receive the data, we will enter it into the system within 7 working days. The cycle owner is notified by email with details of how to access their account. Once logged in, they can check the details on the account are correct and then print out a log book. You can also print off the A6 flyer so the cycle owner has details of the frame number and the BikeRegister website (although it must be made clear they do not need to register the cycle as we will do this via the excel spreadsheet that you email to us after completion).

The Police would offer help through having a gazebo at a car-park or school etc.

As a Community Council or even in conjunction with Aberdeenshire Council, there is a second and third tier of protection also available, whereby the owner is able to afix a QR code to their bike, that is permanent after 24 hours. (I.e. One might require a grinder or similar to remove!) The individual purchase price would be circa £12, yet as a bulk purchase this would be circa £4. This would probably be of interest to companies who have a number of cyclists (Cycle to Work scheme users etc.)
